Sony said during a conference call that it believes the PlayStation VR2 has a “good chance” to outsell its previous headset.
It is worth remembering that the first PlayStation VR was launched in October 2016 and sold 5 million units by the end of 2019, according to data from the Japanese company.
During a meeting at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference, executive Hiroki Totoki was asked how he evaluated the launch of PlayStation VR2 and what were the expectations for the future of the hardware.
He said that the company is very happy with the launch of PlayStation VR2 on PlayStation 5. He recalled that the predecessor sold more than 5 million units and believes that the new one will surpass that mark.
Totoki also spoke regarding forecasts for the virtual reality market, which may show one of the biggest growths in the media and entertainment area in the first half of this decade.
The executive said there is good potential for the virtual and augmented reality market, providing significant advances in the development sector.
In January, Bloomberg published an article claiming that Sony had cut its PlayStation VR2 launch forecasts in half due to disappointing pre-sales numbers.
In response, the Japanese said that this was false and had not reduced the production numbers of the virtual reality headset.
