A senior official at the World Health Organization says thousands in Ukraine are suffering from complex war-related injuries and need rehabilitation services and supplies to help them.
“These injuries include fractures, amputations, spinal cord injuries, brain injuries and burns,” Dr. Satish Mishra of the WHO’s regional office for Europe said in a briefing. “Attacks on healthcare facilities, lack of healthcare workers due to displacement, and power outages have made it difficult for people to access care,” he added.
“Even before the war, in 2019, only regarding half of Ukraine’s population might benefit from rehabilitation services, which were mostly associated with non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease or diabetes,” said Dr. Cathal Morgan, who is also in charge of the World Health Organization. . “Since then, the Corona pandemic and the war have greatly increased the need for rehabilitation services,” he added. “Hence comes the urgency,” he said.
