Free glaucoma screening in Bellecour

World Glaucoma Week aims to raise awareness of the detection and early treatment of this pathology, the leading cause of absolute blindness in the world and in France. This year, it is held from March 12 to 18, 2023.

The glaucoma is characterized by a progressive destruction of the optic nerve, leading to an irreversible alteration of the visual field and then of visual acuity. It is an optic neuropathy most often chronic, asymptomatic, of slow and progressive evolution.

Glaucoma, the leading cause of absolute blindness

It is estimated that 78 million people have a glaucoma worldwide and 111.8 million the number of people affected by this pathology in 2040. Age is the main risk factor for Glaucoma. Among the world’s population, 1 in 200 people suffers from a glaucoma at the age of 40. At the age of 80, 1 in 8 people is affected by the disease.

Neuropathy affects 2% of people over 40 in France, i.e. nearly 1 million men and women. Its frequency increases with age until it reaches 15% at 80 years of age. THE glaucoma is a serious and blinding eye disease. It is a pathology too little known to the general public and very largely under-diagnosed. Half of the people concerned are unaware of it. It represents a real public health issue.
