Although there are numerous solutions, government measures are still largely lacking
Vienna (OTS) – On March 8, 2023, International Women’s Day, it’s regarding giving women the recognition and respect they deserve all year round: This is best done with measures that ensure equality in the labor market. Nevertheless, we are still a long way from actual equality between women and men.
Unfortunately, instead of discussing measures that will bring us closer to this goal, we are vehemently opposed to measures that will also make the situation worse.
The federal government sees part-time work as a “privilege” and wants to punish it by cutting social benefits. Once once more, this affects the women in this country the most, because more than half of the women in Austria work part-time and the reasons for this are not convenience and listlessness.
In order to be able to organize the working time yourself, the opening hours of the children’s educational institutions are a key element. In rural areas in particular, there are still too few childcare places that are compatible with full-time employment, and all families suffer from this – single parents are particularly affected.
Other reasons are, for example, the insufficient supply of full-time positions in some sectors or the still large salary differences between men and women, since women often work in low-wage sectors. “Before proposing measures that primarily disadvantage families and women, it is advisable to know the concerns of women and to offer solutions that do not also punish them.” FSG Vienna women’s spokeswoman Korinna Schumann on this.
There are enough sensible solutions
Important here is the expansion of affordable childcare offers and extension of opening times as well as a legal right to a place in kindergarten from the first birthday.
Flexible working time arrangements also play a major role. In the development of family-friendly working conditions, companies are particularly challenged.
In many companies, for example, there is now an agreement that vacant full-time positions are offered first to part-time employees.
We don’t lack solutions, because we listen and don’t talk regarding people, but with them. “It is our job to make people’s lives easier in such challenging times and not to make them even more difficult. We always stand with all our strength on the side of the women who need our support. Nobody should be punished for their living situation!”, Chairman of the FSG-Vienna Christian Meidlinger, finally.
