Børnehaven Funder Kirkeby Børnehus, which is located near Silkeborg, called the Central and West Jutland Police on Monday at noon to report that two dogs were running freely near the area of the kindergarten.

They were Rottweilers, and somehow the dogs managed to get inside the kindergarten’s fence.

The children and the teachers sought refuge in a greenhouse on the playground.

One of the dogs – a male – was calm, and the employees managed to catch the dog and put it on a leash.

But the other dog – a bitch – had bigger problems. It snarled, and the educators perceived it as threatening and might not catch it.

The bitch ran out of the playground, and this made it possible for the children and the educators to move inside the kindergarten. When the police arrived, they handed over the male dog, while the female still ran free.

It exposed gums, and an officer saw it as threatening when the dog came running towards him. For his own safety and the safety of witnesses, he chose to fire. Twice the dog was hit and it fell over.

To ensure that the dog was killed properly, he fired a third shot, writes TV2 Østjylland.

All the children were inside the kindergarten at the time, and none of them saw or heard the dog being shot.

– We wrote it at Aula so that the parents might talk to the children regarding it, some were frightened, but there is no harm. They were allowed to look at the police cars, says Ulla Kær Christensen, who is the day-to-day manager of the orphanage, to TV2 Østjylland.

The police have found the owner of the dogs. He did not know that they had escaped and, according to the police, he understands the police’s actions on the basis of the bitch’s behaviour.

The dog owner is charged with breaking the Dog Act, and according to the police, fines will most often be involved in those cases.
