Manama: A doctor in Bahrain has been jailed for three months for deliberately making a mistake in the treatment of a four-month-old baby. The order of the Supreme Court of Appeal was in a case where a baby suffered burns on his leg due to improper insertion of IV cannula during surgery. Although the lower court initially ruled that the doctor was innocent, the public prosecution filed an appeal once morest it, and now the sentence has been handed down.
According to the father’s application to the Public Prosecution, the child underwent surgery due to bowel disease. But the father saw the burn-like mark on the child’s leg and inquired regarding the matter with the hospital authorities. The explanation was that the IV cannula used to inject the trip was not placed in the right place and therefore the drugs administered through it went out of the blood vessel and caused the burns. The Public Prosecution, which investigated the incident, directed a detailed investigation into the matter with the National Health Regulatory Authority.
The committee members found that the anesthesiologist who was supposed to insert the IV cannula to give the trip to the baby had a fall. It was found that the doctor was not ready to take care of this or provide the necessary care to the baby during the operation. But the criminal court declared that the doctor was not guilty in the incident. The Supreme Court of Appeal sentenced the doctor to three months in jail on an appeal filed by the public prosecution.
