A total of 250 pulmonologists from all over Spain have gathered at the fifth edition of the ChestAir meeting, organized by GSK in Madrid. The objective of the meeting was to work on how prevention helps in better management of asthma and COPD thanks to P4 Medicine (personalized, predictive, preventive and participatory) and the use of new technologies such as Artificial Intelligence.

Álvar Agustí, pulmonologist at the Barcelona Hospital Clinic, insisted on the importance of reactive medicine to predictive medicine. “That is to say, anticipate the appearance of the disease, what is known as P4 Medicine”. This is key considering that according to EPI-SCAN II data, 75 percent of COPD patients are undiagnosed. “If we are able to predict correctly, we will probably be able to diagnose earlier and start treating earlier. The time factor is very important. It should be remembered that, in this sense, GSK has a program in Spain called “BEFORE” that helps to anticipate this situation”.

P4 medicine and new technologies

For his part, Roberto Romero Pérez, Creative Technological Director at Accenture Song, addressed how the Technology is a great ally of this P4 Medicine.Technology and Healthcare go hand in hand. Cloud computing allows access to more power to calculate the mathematical formulas of the chemical compounds with which we design drug treatments. However, it also allows us to be closer to patients in their day-to-day lives and even improve their quality of life through inclusion due to diversity issues”.

An example of this is how the metaverse is part of the revolution in which the health sector finds itself. “His arrival in Medicine has also meant an advance in terms of diagnosis and treatment. “We can treat older adults remotely, and also perform therapies without the need to transfer the patient to a hospital center.” All this allows health professionals to help each other, even if they are on the other side of the world. In addition, reducing the costs and the necessary resources and making Healthcare more universal in all senses.
