Saved by proximity in France and by Latin America

The Stock Exchange has once more sanctioned the latest figures published by Casino, the title having lost more than 3% on Tuesday. However, the distributor increased its turnover by 4.4% like-for-like in the last quarter, to 9.16 billion euros. But this growth comes mainly from its banners in Latin America (+12% on a comparable basis), and in particular from Assaí, in Brazil, where 60 new stores opened in 2022. To this number must be added the 47 conversions of Extra hypermarkets , for a total of 263 stores. Casino is in direct competition with the Atacadão de Carrefour on this successful format (cash and carry). Grupo Exito, present in Colombia, Uruguay and Argentina, saw its billings climb by 16.3% on a comparable basis.

It was France that disappointed the analysts. Annual growth there fell back to 1.5% last year, following a near-stability (+0.1%) in the last quarter. In hypermarkets, quarterly business volume fell by 11.4%, and like-for-like sales fell by 6.2%. Convenience did better (+6.6% over the year). Monoprix (+ 1.2%) and Franprix (+ 3.4%) also increased over the year, unlike Cdiscount (- 20.7% in 2022, to 1.7 billion).
