Frankly News – The United Nations called on countries to expedite the reception of Syrian refugees from the earthquake-stricken areas in Turkey.
On Saturday, the United Nations said that Syrian refugees are facing the shock of loss and displacement once more, extending the invitation with the arrival of 89 Syrian refugees in the Spanish capital, Madrid, from Turkey.
The 7.8-magnitude earthquake on February 6 killed more than 45,000 people in Turkey and thousands more in neighboring Syria and destroyed hundreds of thousands of buildings.
Turkey has hosted regarding 3.5 million Syrian refugees for nearly 12 years, and last month’s earthquake affected an estimated nine million people, including more than 1.7 million refugees.
“Many refugees who fled to Turkey in search of safety and protection are now facing the trauma of loss and displacement once more following losing their homes and livelihoods,” the United Nations’ International Organization for Migration and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said in a joint statement.
