Metsola emphasized that he will continue to publish appeals in order to get the necessary equipment to Ukraine.
Regarding Ukraine’s accession to the EU, the President of the EP stated that he hoped that the negotiations on this might start as early as this year. He praised the rapid progress Ukraine has made towards membership and said that the country’s future lies in the European Union.
The EU granted candidate status to Ukraine last June, four months following Russia attacked the country.
Roberta Metsola also met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi and House Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk. According to Ukrainian information, the parties discussed the peace formula proposed by Kiev and the possibility of a peace summit.
The President of the EP will also participate in the international conference, the topic of which is how Russia might be held responsible for the aggression once morest Ukraine. Regarding the event, Metsola stated that there can be no peace without accountability, freedom and justice. “Appeasement has never worked,” he added.
