March 1 A new ZEISS POMI LUMERA 700 eye surgery microscope was delivered and installed at the Day Surgery Center of the S. Kudirka Hospital in Alytus County. On the same day, the hospital’s ophthalmologist microsurgeons performed five eye surgeries on patients using this device.
Equipment for the hospital for 152.4 thousand. euros was bought by the Alytus district municipality. Today, the doctors invited the mayor of the municipality, Algirdas Vrubliauskas, to inspect the new equipment and thanked them for the improved working conditions.
Doctor Jurgita Eidukevičienė said that the old microscope served for 20 years and no longer met either practical or technological requirements. According to J. Eidukevičienė, the new device is one of the best in Lithuania, only Kaunas and Santariškii clinics have two such devices each, and Vilnius Antakalnis hospital has one more.
Using this microscope, complex microsurgical eye operations are performed – cataract, color film, removal of eye tumors and others. Ophthalmologists Sonata Steponaitytė, Lukas Šemeklis and J. Eidukevičienė admit that now S. Kudirka’s hospital has the best eye operating room in Southern Lithuania. In addition to a new modern microscope, a surgical table and a special chair for a microsurgeon were also purchased for the ophthalmology operating room.
The new machine has significantly improved the working conditions of doctors, because when operating on the eye, the microsurgeon has a much higher image brightness and contrast, it is safer to operate on complex, severe cases of eye diseases, and the light of this microscope is safer for the patient’s eyes. The duration of the operation is shortened, healing is faster following the operation, and the person’s vision improves.
Mayor A. Vrubliauskas says that S. Kudirka’s hospital is the most important medical institution in the region, residents of the Alytus district are also treated there, so municipalities are trying to create better conditions for diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
Previously, at the request of the doctors of the S. Kudirka hospital, the municipality helped purchase a computer tomograph, a sterilizer, an oxygen generator, and other important diagnostic equipment.
