Butrimoniai high school is an active initiator and participant of various civic and patriotic events, so the brutal war in Ukraine that has been going on for more than a year has not left anyone indifferent, and the struggle of Ukrainians themselves for their freedom and ours encourages community members to look for opportunities to help and support.
The gymnasium community expresses its support for Ukraine in various forms and ways: next to the gymnasium, the Lithuanian tricolor flag of Ukraine flutters, the entrances to the gymnasium are lit up in blue and yellow colors during the dark, in the corridors there are stands declaring support, on the occasion of February 16, the students of Butrimonių Gymnasium created an acrostic of support (from a verse a word or combination of words made up of the first letters of the lines of the work) for Ukraine, February 24 the gymnasium community joined the campaign “RADAROM” initiated by LRT, Daria Kostrykina, a high school student born in Ukraine studying at the gymnasium, supports the country with patriotic songs performed in national competitions, etc.
March 1, on the initiative of Valdas Valvonis, the director of the Butrimoniai Gymnasium. a meeting was held with the honorary consul of Lithuania in the Luhansk region of Ukraine, Robert Gabulas, and the commander of the 1st rifle team of the Lithuanian Riflemen’s Union, officer Antanas Juozapavičiaus. capt. Skirmants Valatkevičius regarding the possibility of cooperation in organizing support for victims of the war in Ukraine. R. Gabulas, Honorary Consul of Lithuania in the Luhansk region of Ukraine, says that Luhansk and Irpinė are currently particularly badly affected by the war. According to the consul, material support is very important, but social and civic support of society is no less important and necessary. There are many missing persons in the country, war cripples, bereaved relatives, lonely children and teenagers who have no one to take care of properly. The director of the gymnasium, V. Valvonis, noticed that in the age of modern technologies, it is possible to organize remote meetings of children and youth, cooperation competitions, various projects, etc. S. Valatkevičius, commander of the 1st national team of the Riflemen, emphasized the benefits of purposeful employment of children and youth and emphasized his support for the initiative to organize a joint summer camp for Lithuanian and Ukrainian children in Dzūkija.
This is the first cooperation meeting, but certainly not the last. We have a lot to talk regarding and we know what we can do together without hesitation. War-torn Ukraine and its children desperately need our support. Let’s be united and strong together!
For the freedom of Ukraine!
