The girl, who had lost consciousness, had been revived by the emergency services before being transported to the hospital where she had been diagnosed with a fractured skull and a cerebral hemorrhage. She had been placed in an artificial coma. This Friday, we learn that the child died.
Due to the seriousness of the facts, a medical examiner had been appointed by the prosecution. According to the expert, the sequence of events as recounted on Tuesday by the guardian, who maintained her version before the examining magistrate on Wednesday, is “not compatible with the injuries suffered by the baby”.
The Leuven public prosecutor’s office had meanwhile opened an investigation for intentional assault and battery. The guard had benefited from a conditional provisional release. The investigation is continuing under the direction of the investigating judge to establish the exact circumstances of the facts.
The decision to suspend the thirty-year-old’s license is temporary and will be reassessed according to the elements delivered by the investigation. The Opgroeien agency indicates that it is doing this preventively, in order to limit the consequences for all parties.
At the time of the incident, two other children were present at the caretaker’s house, which accommodates five in total. The competent Leuven authorities are looking for emergency places for these toddlers, as well as two others who were to begin their adaptation with the babysitter.
The Opgroeien agency declared itself an injured party in order to be able to access the court file.
