The climate protection movement “Fridays for Future” (FFF) and the trade union ver.di are calling for a joint global climate strike today. In Germany, more than 240 campaigns are planned in around 30 cities. There will also be a large demonstration in downtown Hamburg.

According to the FFF, the meeting point is the Jungfernstieg in downtown Hamburg. A rally is planned there from 1 p.m., following which there will be a demonstration through the city. The Hamburg police expect around 7,000 participants.

Appeal for compliance with the 1.5 degree limit

The climate protectors call for compliance with the goals of the Paris climate protection agreement. In order to still meet the 1.5 degree target, the rapid expansion of renewable energies and a rapid turnaround in mobility are essential. The decisive factor is an immediate end to subsidies for fossil fuels and a reduction in coal-fired power to a quarter of today’s output. In addition, a CO2 tax must be imposed on all greenhouse gas emissions without delay. A realistic price per ton of CO2 is 180 euros.

Fair wages demanded

Climate protection and social justice “can no longer be played off once morest each other”. That is why climate protectors and the union would take to the streets together. “A radical and fair turnaround in traffic only works with fair wages and better working conditions for employees and massive investments in frequency and infrastructure,” said FFF spokeswoman Annika Rittmann.

Demand for affordable tickets

The climate movement and the union are demanding better working conditions in local public transport, more staff, affordable tickets, an expansion of the route network and higher frequency. ver.di emphasized that massive investments in local public transport are necessary to ensure that low-emission transport is reliable and affordable.

Traffic obstructions in downtown Hamburg

At the During the most recent climate strike in September, around 15,000 demonstrators gathered in downtown Hamburg. Because of the demonstration, there are significant traffic delays. The demo route leads from Jungfernstieg via Bergstrasse and Speersort to Steinstrasse, then over Steintorwall and Glockengiesserwall to Lombardsbrücke. Then it continues via Esplanade, Stephansplatz and Dammtorstraße and via Gänsemarkt back to Jungfernstieg. The police recommends all drivers to drive around the inner city area on Friday followingnoon.
