After much waiting, it seems that the 5G of the type Standalone (IN) is even coming to iPhones in Brazil. This, of course, according to the second beta of iOS 16.4released on February 28.
Even with this indication, there is still a lot of confusion surrounding the availability of the feature on Brazilian operators and compatible devices – something that should only become clearer closer to the release of the final version of this version of the operating system, which may still take a few weeks.
Compatible devices
However, rummaging through the archives of the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel)our reader Sadi Oliveira Jr. noticed that there is a list there with all the devices that are able to receive 5G in the country (both the NSA, Non-standaloneas well as SA).
The good news is that all iPhones that have a 5G modem will apparently be compatible, namely:
- iPhone SE (3rd generation)
- iPhone 12 mini
- iPhone 12
- iPhone 12 Pro
- iPhone 12 Pro Max
- iPhone 13 mini
- iPhone 13
- iPhone 13 Pro
- iPhone 13 Pro Max
- iPhone 14
- iPhone 14 Plus
- iPhone 14 Pro
- iPhone 14 Pro Max
Despite this green light, it still does not mean that the technology will reach all these devices. For now, Apple does not make this explicit in any support documents on its website. What we know, so far, according to reports from our readers, is that 5G SA is appearing only on line 14 iPhones.
As this is a beta version, the next test versions of iOS 16.4 will be able to expand this to other models and operators — iPhones using TIM and Vivo networks already have the feature, while Claro seems not to have the thing released.
Plans with 5G
Another piece of information to be aware of is that, even if your iPhone is compatible with 5G SA, not all cellular plans will support it.
According to Technoblog, TIM e Clear limit access. In the case of Clearonly 100GB and 200GB plans are eligible [PDF]; at TIM, it is necessary to contract the Turbo 5G package (which is promotionally free in the first year).
compatible chips
Added to this is the fact that some operators will still be able to ask customers to change their SIM card to use 5G Standalone, either migrating to a new compatible physical model or to eSIM.
O MacMagazine contacted operators TIM, Vivo and Claro — in addition to also contacting Apple Brasil — to better understand how this situation will turn out; If anything new comes up, we’ll update this article with more information. ????
