The residents who live near the Bariloche household waste dump and who began to mobilize more than a year ago to claim its closure, assured that the construction of a new “cell” within the complex, as promoted by the mayor Gustavo Gennuso, “It is a mockery” and does not respond to the demands. Today they claimed at the opening of sessions.
They insisted on pointing out that the The only possible way is to move the landfill to another locationof a regional nature, and that they do not see “political will” in the municipality or in the province to expedite this project.
Daniela Zurita, from the El Frutillar neighborhood, said today that an ordinance was recently approved “with the commitment of all the blocks”, including the councilors who respond to Gennuso, to set a closing date for the landfill that expires on December 4. But the new cell, in the same property, is “maintaining the problem for another five years,” he assured.
Zurita appeared this morning with a group of women at the Sarmiento library, where the mayor presented his annual speech before the Deliberative Council. He assured that they, their families and their neighbors cannot wait any longer. “We are not interested in their times, we cannot even open the window”said the woman, referring to the smoke and odors emitted by the repository.
Another neighbor of the Valle Azul neighborhood, Cecilia Acostaalso stressed that they are not moved by partisan interests and feel disappointed by politicians. “They promised to do something and they don’t keep it”he referred.
He also said that they do not see a clear initiative in Bariloche to apply, for example, the same solution as in San Martín de los Andes, where the garbage is compacted and transferred to a final disposal site located in Alicurá, some 100 kilometers away.
Zurita said that the current landfill “is collapsed, the same municipal officials say so, and it is already a public health problem. But the mayor doesn’t seem to take notice. The reality is not what he says.” He assured that there are some 20,000 inhabitants of the neighborhoods directly affected and “there are children and older adults with respiratory problems” who need an immediate solution.
He pointed out that the municipality should determine right now “another final disposal site”, with a comprehensive treatment system that includes “separation plant, staff in white and with all the elements”.
Recovery and recycling today is a task assumed by an association unrelated to the municipality. Other tasks are carried out by plant employees, who according to the women, “are blamed for the situation”, accuse them of not notifying the Civil Defense of the fires “and there are several who are on trial”.
Zurita recalled that the one in Bariloche is listed as one of the 50 most polluting dumps in the world and that there is not only an ordinance but also a provincial law that prohibits this type of complex in urban areas.
