The creation of World Adolescent Mental Wellness Day was an initiative of The Hollister Confidence Project, a program driven by people who are dedicated to helping this sector of the population feel more confident and capable.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef), adolescence is a fundamental stage of human development for the formation of social and emotional habits that impact the mental well-being of the individual. .
In this regard, various studies and statistics maintain that one in five adolescents has a mental health condition.
Among the most common, experts point out anxiety, altered mood, attention deficit and other behavioral and eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia.
They also include suicide, depression, psychosis, risk behaviors such as drug use, unsafe sexual practices, and self-injurious behaviors, including cutting or burning the skin.
The WHO and Unicef consider it vitally important to design and apply strategies to support the mental health of adolescents, through the application of various resources that benefit their psychological well-being and that have a positive impact on their lives, through socio-emotional learning.
