The Ironton collided with a grain tanker on a rainy night in September 1894, causing both to sink, according to the news agency. AP.

After the accident, the captain and six crew members of the Ironton boarded a lifeboat. However, most of the crew was towed along with the ship, before the lifeboat was separated from the hull. Only 2 sailors survived the accident.
