TODAY: March 1, 1977, Diallo Telli dies of black diet

Born in 1925 in Poredaka in Mamou, Diallo Telli, one of the most illustrious sons that Guinea has fathered, completed his higher education at the William Ponty Normal School in Dakar and at the Normal School of Overseas France. in Paris where he obtained his law degree in 1951.

A seasoned diplomat, Boubacar Telli Diallo, his real name, was appointed head of the United Nations High Commissioner for West Africa (AOF) in Dakar, the highest post held by an African from the French colonial period. In April 1957, he was appointed Secretary General of the AOF.

When Guinea gained independence in 1958, he was the major player in his country’s accession to the United Nations. In 1964, when the Organization of African Unity was created, Diallo Telli was appointed Secretary General of the organization, a position he held until 1972.

Arrested in July 1976 at his home in Conakry, Diallo Telli was transferred to Camp Boiro where he was locked up in cell 52, tortured and the letter D (diet) inscribed on the door of his cell.

Deprived of food and drink, the illustrious Diallo Telli died of black diet (deprivation of food and drink) on March 1, 1977.
