Sixteen years following its release, Sony’s PlayStation 3 received a new update on Tuesday, February 28. A patch that slightly improves performance, but will not prevent the slow death of the console.
The venerable PlayStation 3 has not said its last word. On Tuesday, February 28, Sony’s PS3 received a new update… 16 years following its release! Its last update was in May 2022.
Because yes, despite the release of the PS4 in 2013 and then the cessation of sales in 2017, the seventh generation Japanese game console is still used by millions of players around the world. In 2021, Sony had also reversed its announcement to close the PlayStation Store on the PS3 in the face of criticism.
The Japanese manufacturer therefore still provides the minimum service to keep the ancestor of the PS5 standing. This new software version remains minor: this 4.90 patch only improves the “system performance“, without further details from Sony.
An increasingly dilapidated console
Some signs show all the same that the console is gradually dying since the end of its marketing: update 4.89, which occurred in May 2022, removed the possibility of creating and managing your PlayStation Network account from the console. Alternatively, the patch note suggests using your PC or smartphone to “better performance, speed and security ».
Similarly, in 2021, Sony removed the option to pay by credit card or PayPal account on the console. If PS3 games will remain playable for a long time, the PlayStation console is aging in spite of itself in the face of technical and security requirements.
