A goal with less than five seconds left in overtime, more than 50 saves from their goaltender and three points from their new defenseman, the Boston Bruins were right to celebrate on Tuesday night.
They defeated the Calgary Flames 4-3 at the end of extra time thanks to Charlie McAvoy.
The forward was forgotten to the right of Jacob Markstrom and he put the finishing touches to a fine passing game with Brad Marchand and Patrice Bergeron to offer the Bruins an eighth consecutive victory.
Although McAvoy put the finishing touches on the evening, Linus Ullmark deserves the flowers in this meeting which he finished with a total of 54 saves. By comparison, the Bruins recorded 19 shots on the Flames net in the entire game.
In his third game with his new teammates, Dmitry Orov broke the ice. In the fifth minute of the first period, he carried the puck to unleash an inbounds shot that surprised Dan Vladar.
The defender returned to the charge less than 10 minutes later with a slap shot following a face-off that caused the strings to vibrate. Vladar was replaced by Markstrom following allowing two goals on just five shots.
The Flames replied with three straight goals. Jakob Pelletier thought he would give the Flames the lead in the third period following Jonathan Huberdeau’s pass, but the puck was accidentally redirected into the back of the net by Derek Forbort’s skate. The goal therefore returned to Huberdeau.
Orlov inherited the disc in entry following Jake DeBrusk took a solid check followingwards. This play gave the defenseman time to spot Pavel Zacha who pushed the puck into an open cage.
Markstrom surrendered for the second time in the game in overtime, on the 15e Bruins shot at him.
