WELLINGTON: New Zealand’s performance to beat England by one run resulted in the narrowest margin of victory in Test cricket history. This is not the first time in Test cricket that a low-run victory has been scored. In 1993, the West Indies won by one run. Windies made history by defeating Australia on their soil. The history of wins by less than five runs was born in the England-Aussies Ashes series.

England won twice. In 2005, England defeated Aussies in Birmingham by just two runs. In 1982, when England won by three runs, the opposition was Australia. The shocking defeat of the Aussies was at home in Melbourne. Apart from this, Australia beat England by three runs on their soil in 1902 and history. The match was in Manchester.

In 1993, the West Indies beat Australia by one run in Adelaide on the strength of the pacers. Batting first, Windies were all out for 252 runs. Brian Lara was the top scorer with 50 runs. Merv Hughes took five wickets. In reply, Australia scored 213 runs. West Indies lead by 39 runs. In the second innings, Windies were all out for 146 runs, while Australia’s target was 186 runs. The West Indies pacers lined up the hosts who batted to a small target. Curtley Ambrose took four wickets, Courtney Walsh took three and Ian Bishop took two wickets to give the visitors a thrilling one-run victory.
