Finnish parliament starts debate on NATO accession law

After a long period of non-alignment, this was a historic step for the two Nordic countries. For Finland, there is also the fact that it has a border with Russia that is around 1,340 kilometers long. All 30 current NATO members must ratify the admission of the two countries. 28 of them have done so for a long time, Turkey and Hungary not yet.

There are no Hungarian objections to the accession. The parliament in Budapest wanted to start a debate on Wednesday. It should be voted on next week. However, Turkey has been blocking for a long time. She justifies this attitude primarily with the fact that Sweden does not take sufficient action once morest terrorist organizations.

In view of this blocking attitude, there is currently some debate as to whether Finland might possibly be accepted into NATO on its own for the time being, should Sweden’s accession drag on. However, both countries have repeatedly asserted that they want to become members of the alliance together and at the same time.

A final vote in the Finnish parliament is expected in the early followingnoon tomorrow, as a parliamentary spokesman said at the request of the German Press Agency.
