Latin American smartphone market retreated in the last quarter

O Latin American smartphone market passed by your worst fourth quarter in nearly a decade in the year 2022, pointed out a new report by Counterpoint Research. The sector, it is worth remembering, had already retracted in the region in the previous quarter.

According to the research firm, smartphone shipments dropped 14.2% in the last period. According to analyst and consultant Tina Lu, this phenomenon can be explained, among other reasons, by the conservative posture of the manufacturers, who already expected a drop in demand for new devices at the end of last year.

Another possible reason for this retreat was the World Cup in Qatar, which this time took place between the months of November and December instead of in June/July. This event, according to the analyst, caused many people to invest in new television sets and postpone the purchase of a smartphone.

In addition to all this, of course, the political and economic instability that the region has been going through in recent times also enters into this account. Weakening local currencies and rising handset prices were also major obstacles for the sector.

Samsung continues unabated as the leader of the Latin American market, with a market share of 41.6%. The company, it is worth noting, led in all countries in the region thanks to its entry-level smartphones and its good performance in countries like Mexico.

Motorola, in turn, comes right behind with half of the market share of its South Korean rival, although it did well in countries like Brazil, Mexico and Argentina. Xiaomi, which has been losing ground in recent months, appears in third.

Me and Apple managed to increase its presence in Latin America both in the last quarter and in the entire year of 2022. The company’s good performance was mainly driven by the iPhone 11, which continues to sell very well even three years following its launch.
