Stroke is a disease that causes neurological symptoms due to blockage or bursting of blood vessels in the brain, damaging brain cells. Cerebral hemorrhage occurs when a cerebral blood vessel expands and ruptures, and when a blood clot separates from a blood vessel wall blocks a cerebral blood vessel and cuts off blood supply to the brain, it is called cerebral infarction.
The number of stroke patients in Korea is steadily increasing due to the aging of the population. According to the National Statistical Office, stroke is the fourth leading cause of death in Koreans following cancer, heart disease and pneumonia. That’s why strokes are also called ‘silent killers’.
Symptoms of a stroke include paralysis of a part of the body ▲decreased sensory function ▲decreased visual function ▲decreased understanding ▲aphasia. Even if life is saved from a stroke, regarding 40 to 60% suffer from followingeffects such as movement disorders, and in severe cases, mental problems such as depression may also be experienced. In addition, the recurrence rate within one year of stroke patients is regarding 10%.
Therefore, it is very important for patients who have experienced a stroke to make secondary prevention efforts to prevent recurrence. Patients who have suffered a stroke should improve their high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, dyslipidemia, smoking, drinking, and obesity. It is necessary to prevent cholesterol from accumulating on the inner wall of blood vessels due to various chronic diseases, gradually narrowing the cerebral blood vessels, or clotting of blood vessels by accumulation of blood clots in the narrowed blood vessels.
People at risk of stroke should be especially careful of atrial fibrillation. If you have a cardiovascular disease such as heart valve disease, a blood clot made in the heart can enter the brain and block blood vessels in the brain, causing a cerebral infarction.
Atrial fibrillation, one of the arrhythmia diseases, means that the heart beats irregularly and rapidly. Atrial fibrillation is usually caused by fast and irregular electrical signals from the inside of the pulmonary veins connected to the left atrium. Strokes caused by atrial fibrillation have a mortality rate twice as high as strokes caused by other causes.
In December of last year, the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC), along with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease-related societies, <심뇌혈관질환 예방과 관리를 위한 9대 생활 수칙>has been revised and published. The Agency for Disease Control and Prevention announced that the risk of early death due to severe cardiovascular disease (myocardial infarction, stroke) can be reduced by 80% just by improving the nine life rules.
