Mt. Seorak cable car installation ‘permission’ ‥ Ministry of Environment, conditional consent

The Wonju Regional Environment Office of the Ministry of Environment announced today that it has completed consultations on the environmental impact assessment of the Osaek Cable Car (railway) installation project in Seoraksan National Park in Yangyang-gun, Gangwon-do.

This is a ′′ conditional agreement ′′ that is, in effect, permission to install.

The Environment Agency explained that “measures to reduce environmental impacts are proposed in the environmental impact assessment supplement submitted by Yangyang-gun on December 28 of last year.”

The Osaek Cable Car installation project is one of Gangwon-do’s 15 policy tasks selected by Jihyeok Balanced Development Special Committee of Presidential Transition Committee Yoon Seok-yeol, and Kim Jin-tae’s election pledge for Gangwon-do Governor.

Earlier, in the opinion of an institution specializing in environmental impact assessment of the five-color cable car released by Lee Eun-joo, a member of the National Assembly’s Environment and Labor Committee, the Korea Environmental Research Institute (KEI) stated that “it is inappropriate to install a cable car that has a large impact on the natural environment.”

Since the Ministry of Environment made a decision to approve the business in a different conclusion from the professional institution, the controversy surrounding the installation of the five-color cable car is expected to continue.

The planned site for the installation of the Osaek Cable Car is a national park and nature conservation district, which accounts for only 1.65% of the total land area, and has been designated as several protected areas, such as the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the core area of the Mt.
