Jose Perera, a worker doing construction work on a building in Sea Isle City, New Jersey, died trapped between two floors when the balcony on the top floor, where he was standing, fell on him.
According to a Sea Isle City police report, a city regarding 20 miles from Atlantic City, New Jersey, the accident occurred around 2:20 p.m. on Friday, February 24, when the eighth-story balcony suddenly collapsed into the Spinnaker complex at 3500-3700 Boardwalk.
The accident killed the worker José Pereira, 43-year-old Philadelphia resident who was doing construction work on the seventh-floor balcony.
José Pereira was screaming while he was trapped
The local police reported that Pereira’s body was trapped under 30 foot concrete slab for several hours before responders were able to cut through approximately 12 inches of reinforced concrete.
Once an opening was created in the wall, the concrete slab was lifted with heavy lift airbags and his body was recovered though sadly it was too late.
Local media reported that, before the airbags lifted him up, a witness heard Pereira yell ‘Get me off my back’.
Pereira, who worked for Ferguson Constructing Inc. in Pennsylvania, f He was pronounced dead around 10 p.m. m. of Friday.
A complicated rescue job
Police say they tried to rescue José earlier, but the rescue effort was very difficult, and they found it impossible because the surrounding area has ‘significant cracks’.
Upon assessing the situation, authorities determined that the entire side of the building was unsafe and c They began to evacuate the residents.
Authorities are investigating what caused the building to collapse.
