Premier League – Liverpool hung on the lawn of Crystal Palace (0-0)

A non-match, a purge, a long moment of embarrassment. Call it what you will, but that goalless draw between Crystal Palace and Liverpool at Selhurst Park (0-0) summed up all the current malaise experienced by the Reds. Swept away by Real Madrid earlier in the week at Anfield, Jürgen Klopp’s men struggled to bring home a point from London. Injured beast, Liverpool is in seventh place in the Premier League, six points behind Tottenham, fourth and last holder of a ticket for the next Champions League. “Humiliation”, “Disgrace”: The British press in shock for Liverpool

Jürgen Klopp had said it in a press conference: for Liverpool, each of the eighteen remaining matches in this English championship should be approached as a qualifying match for the next Champions League. Unfortunately for the German coach, the mayonnaise did not take hold on the lawn of Crystal Palace, the only Premier League team to have still not won in the league since the start of 2023. Worse still: at the time of draw up the important moments of the match, Liverpool can be happy to get the points split and the French international hopeful Michael Olise gave the outgoing C1 finalist stressful minutes.

A Liverpool little to his advantage

Symbol of the bad luck of his team, Trent Alexander-Arnold showed big defensive gaps. Following an ill-adjusted pass, the English international defender gave Jean-Philippe Mateta the opportunity to open the scoring, but the former Le Havre striker narrowly missed on his ball stung in front of Alisson Becker (13th). Once once more jostled, TAA allowed Mateta to get another clear chance but his attempt ricocheted off the crossbar (42nd). Dominated, Liverpool only worked intermittently thanks to Mohamed Salah, the only member of the visiting attack to stand out.

The Egyptian missed the target (10th), then found Vicente Guaita in his path (41st). After the break, his third attempt crashed on the bar (49th). After that ? Almost nothing. As a good guide, Salah launched Cody Gakpo in depth, but the Batavian completely missed his finish (81st). After one last hot move from the Eagles, the end of the game has come and Liverpool have avoided the worst. But for how much longer?
