(PLO)- Viet Duc Friendship Hospital has successfully performed the first multi-organ transplant in Vietnam.
On February 24, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital announced the first multi-organ transplant in Vietnam for a patient with end-stage renal failure, from a brain-dead multi-organ donor.
Patient TTQ (37 years old, from Gia Lai province), suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy, heart failure and severe arrhythmia, leading to end-stage renal failure, has had to undergo hemodialysis continuously for 5-6 years.

Patients often receive emergency treatment at major cardiovascular centers in Ho Chi Minh City and Thua Thien-Hue due to acute episodes of tachycardia. All medical treatments did not bring results, so he was instructed by doctors to have both heart and kidney transplants.
In mid-2022, Mr. Q was referred to Vietnam-Germany Friendship Hospital. After careful evaluation, the hospital’s expert panel agreed to perform a simultaneous heart and kidney transplant for the patient with donated organs from a brain-dead donor.
Although heart and kidney transplants are very routine techniques at the hospital, transplanting both organs at the same time is still a big challenge, requiring very careful preparation.
Over the next 6 months, there were no really suitable brain-dead organ donors and the patient continued to go to hospitals for heart failure treatment and dialysis.
In early February, 2023, a patient with brain death due to a very severe traumatic brain injury was agreed by his family to donate multiple organs to save other serious cases.
All professional and legal procedures are quickly completed. The transplant lasted 10 hours, all intraoperative developments were completely consistent with the well-prepared procedure before surgery.
According to doctors, the postoperative course was quite heavy, both in terms of heart transplant function as well as kidney transplant, but it was within the expectations and preparation of the doctors.
Eight days following the transplant, heart and kidney functions had recovered to near normal. The patient was able to sit up, eat and communicate, without the need for special cardiovascular and respiratory support. Patients will continue to receive additional treatment for several weeks according to the general protocols following organ transplantation.
Prof. Dr. Tran Binh Giang, Director of Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, said that transplanting two organs at the same time for a patient is a very difficult and complicated surgery. In Vietnam, only four cases of transplanting two organs have been successfully performed for patients.
