By “castrating” the National Electoral Institute through the reform approved this week, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador restores the former presidential control over elections and vote counting, warned the American newspaper The New York Post.
In an editorial titled “The president of Mexico kills democracy while Washington plays games”, the outlet harshly evaluates the recently approved “Plan B” of the electoral reform, but also criticizes the lukewarmness and indifference of the government headed by Joe Biden.
“In a stark seizure of power, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador emasculates the National Electoral Institute and snuffs out the chances of remotely free or fair elections.”
He refers that this week the Senate voted in favor of the reform to the institute that fundamentally, he says, causes hundreds of polling stations to be left without trained independent officials, restoring in fact the presidential control over the elections that he had before the 1990s.
With all certainty, he adds, this will allow AMLO “to choose the state governors and put a peon as his successor” in the president.
“And since he has declared a truce with the cartels, they will continue to rule much of the country.”
In other words, “conditions south of our country will soon push millions to try to cross the border.”
Remember that last year López Obrador failed in his attempt to consolidate a constitutional reform in electoral matters. And, “if the opposition manages to get the Supreme Court to knock down the new reform, it will try another way.”
He ends by saying that in the last two years, US President Joe Biden, his party and his applauding media have been “furious” regarding the threats to democracy within the United States, but that they have badly ignored the existing threat in Mexico, which It’s much worse.
