Many dogs affected by a virus, veterinarians urge caution

It’s a real little epidemic that circulates among dogs. In Montélimar (Drôme), many cases of parvovirus have been identified in canines in the area, reports The Dauphine.

This highly contagious virus can be fatal in dogs that are not vaccinated. The symptoms are similar to gastroenteritis: diarrhea with blood, vomiting, dehydration. In veterinary practices, where many cases have been recorded, several unvaccinated dogs have died.

Avoid crowded places

Veterinarians therefore urge humans to be cautious. “The virus is very contagious and resistant on surfaces,” explains a caregiver. “The dog can catch it by direct contact with a sick dog or indirectly with elements where the virus is present. »

The parvovirus vaccine is therefore strongly recommended for all four-legged friends. Veterinarians also advise avoiding walks in busy areas for some time until the outbreak subsides.
