Mario Kacang has become one of the most fragrant songwriter names in the Indonesian music industry.
Mario has composed songs for a number of famous singers several times, from Afgan, Sammy Simorangkir, Rio Febrian, to Marcell.
One of Mario’s most famous and explosive songs in the music industry is Thank you love Afghanistan sung.
“Thank you loveAfgan on the first album,” said Mario Kacang in a YouTube broadcast by Ferdy Element quoted on Friday (24/2).
However, Afgan’s song ‘Thank You Love’, which exploded on the market, did not bring big profits to Mario as the creator.
Mario, who at that time was just learning how to write songs professionally, apparently still did not understand the ins and outs of the music industry.
“So that’s it, so this is also a lesson for new friends, so because I was still writing songs at that time, I didn’t know the industry, didn’t understand the system, didn’t know SOPs, royalties and so on,” said Mario.
Mario then explained how the process of creating the song Thank You Love and the wages he received following the song was sold.
Mario did not expect the song Thank You Love to explode and catapult Afgan’s name as a well-known male singer in Indonesia.
“So at that time the album was finished, there were already 10 songs, I was just playing around in the followingnoon trying to make a song, I said to Afgan, ‘I have a song, try singing it’. At that time, out of the 10 songs that were already on the album, Afgan, the title song is ‘Sadistic’, which will become the second single from the album, created by Bebi Romeo,” said Mario.
“Then when I played and Afgan sang the song, the executive producer from the Afgan label actually liked the song, ‘Just this, record it too’, so the song entered and the number of songs became odd, so 13 songs. When selecting the first single song , rather Thank you love which became the mainstay song, which Sadistic even become the second single,” he continued.
Unfortunately, Mario at that time did not really understand the royalty system and how to sell songs properly in the music industry.
Mario, who composed two songs for Afgan’s debut album, only received a nominal value of less than Rp. 4 million.
“I was immediately happy because the song ended up being used, contract problems and other things at that time I didn’t understand, I sold them out at the time, 2 songs, all the packages, basically I got no more than IDR 4 million,” said Mario.
The nominal that Mario received as a creator was certainly not comparable to the profits he earned from the royalties for the song Thank You Love.
This valuable experience eventually became Mario’s lesson to be more literate regarding the system in the music industry.
“I don’t know (selling out of a song turns out to be detrimental). I mean so that I don’t misunderstand either, selling out of a song isn’t always detrimental, if the song doesn’t become a single on the album, it doesn’t have the potential to explode, selling it out if the numbers are right, it might be profitable, said Mario.
“For the case of the song Thank you lovethe total figure that I got was certainly below if it were royalties, because following that I didn’t receive anything else, it turned out that suddenly the song was popular, I just learned from there,” he concluded.
