Good start to the year for renewable energy generation

After the record reached by renewables last year, 2023 was not far behind and the green projects throughout the country registered a production high during the first month of the year. With a sustained contribution from wind and photovoltaic farms, generation was above 1,600 GWh for the fifth consecutive month.

During the first month of the year the green parks generated some 1,642 GWh, and although it means a drop of 5% compared to DecemberThis is a high level that allowed us to cover more than 12% of the national demand.

The data comes from the monthly report prepared every month by the Wholesale Electricity Market Administration Company (Cammesa), added to information processed by Power On.

The first month of the year stands out, as always, the contribution of wind projects represented regarding 70% of all production. However, the participation of photovoltaic solar parks also stands out, since they have maintained a significant generation for four months.

1.146 GWh
is the power generated by the wind farms in Argentina, during the first month of the year.

According to official data, during January, wind farms generated 1,146 GWh and concentrated 69.79% of total generation. Compared to December, wind energy production was 6.9% lower.

Solar parks generated some 306 GWh in January, and exceeded the 300 GWh barrier for the fourth consecutive month. Compared to December, it means a jump of 2%. The contribution of photovoltaic energy represented 18% of the total and it was the second most important.

Unlike what was seen last year, solar projects begin to gain a greater share of total generation, diversifying the national renewable energy matrix that is focused on wind generation.

306 GWh
was the photovoltaic solar generation of January.

In third place was the contribution of the small renewable hydraulic projects that produced regarding 99 GWh. SThis is the lowest record in the last 5 months, although it remains high considering that last year there were months in which 50% less was generated. On December it means a decrease of 10%.

Lastly, the plants biogas produced regarding 32 GWh, while biomass produced another 60 GWh and, in this case, it means a drop of 3% and 9%, respectively, compared to what was seen in December of last year.

More solar power by 2023

The news for the renewable energy industry came early this 2023 with the official announcement of the new green tender. The government seeks to add up to 620 MW of new installed capacity, with terms until 2027.

However, we will not have to wait that long for the installed capacity to increase at the national level, since There are two solar projects that are scheduled to start operating in the coming months.

It’s all regarding the parks Ullum and Zonda saws, from Genneia and YPF Luz companies, respectively. Both are located in San Juan and They will have an installed capacity of 80 MW and 100 MW, in each case.

As announced, the Genneia park will start producing during the first quarter of this year, while the YPF Luz park will start operating in the second quarter.

Not all the new renewable power this year will be solar and it is also The expansion of the Pampa Energía III wind farm is projected to start operating, operated by the homonymous company. It will add 81 MW of power and its inauguration date will be in the second quarter of this year.
