A mother generally acts seeking the best for her children and is willing to do anything for them. And that was precisely the intention of Laura Flores when -in March 2022- she supported and encouraged her son Alejandro to have a gastric balloon operation to lose weight.
The surgical intervention had apparently been successful, until in February 2023, the 15-year-old boy began to vomit blood. The picture immediately led the other children of Flores to take Alejandro to the emergency room of a hospital in Florida, where he was treated and admitted urgently for pancreatitis, since his mother was traveling in Mexico for reasons professionals.
After immediately returning to the United States and once the crisis was over, one of the artist’s priorities was to apologize to her son. “The first thing I did was apologize,” she confessed in an interview she gave to the “Todo para la mujer” program.

“In Colombia the doctors are certified, that is, we cannot say that because you went to a Latin American country, that Mexico is too, things are wrong. I do not think that medicine in the US is above us, not at all “Flores commented, referring to the criticism she received for having convinced her son to put on the gastric balloon to lose weight, a procedure that she herself admits did not work as it should.
“Yes, he blamed me,” she admitted excitedly, although she assured that she was authorized by a doctor to do this procedure on the teenager, and the gastroenterologist who treated them at the Florida hospital, “an Argentine living in the United States, tells me: ‘No ma’am (there is no guilt), what you did was correct, what happens is that there are risks in everything'”.
Despite the health professional’s reassuring explanation, Flores mightn’t completely shake off the burden. Fortunately, it seems that another operation will not be necessary.
His special relationship with Alejandro
As explained by the singer, the teenager presents “high functionality autism”. “That means that he is much more intelligent than all the people who are sitting here, but it is when he wants,” the 59-year-old television host was quick to clarify.
“If he doesn’t feel like talking to you, then he won’t talk to you, but if he wants to talk to you, he’ll go to a professorship for anything you least expect,” revealed the Mexican, who is also the mother of three other children, Patricio, Ana Sofía and Maria. High-functioning autism is described by Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital also as Asperger’s syndrome and “is characterized by difficulty with social interaction, obsessions, bizarre speech patterns, few facial expressions, and other peculiarities.”
Flores explained that despite the fact that his son Alejandro presents this condition, he does not reject physical demonstrations of effect. “In fact, right now my other two puberties (Patricio and Ana Sofía) don’t pay attention to me, I want to kiss them and they do that (to one side) and Alejandro does (leaves himself),” she commented in the interview.
This year has undoubtedly been very hard for Flores, who, in addition to the complicated health situation of her husband (suffers from an autoimmune disease), the American Matthew Flannery, has now had to add this unexpected situation to the well-being of her son.
