What might tempt a Norwegian band to describe themselves as state zero to call? Does that mean the zero line of the heartbeat? Or zero degrees Kelvin as the absolute zero point at which life is no longer possible?
At least the latter doesn’t go with the dissonant Progressive Death Black Metal of the band mentioned, because it’s bursting with life, not necessarily with comforting warmth, but with rabid heat. After the previous two singles, the debut album can of course also be followed Beyond The Limit Of Sanity describe the musicians from Oslo, which is now available digitally and on CD. In addition, thanks to the wonderful artwork, it also makes an excellent impression on vinyl, at least visually.
Cool, by no means cold Progressive Death Metal
And musically? With all the dizzying genre names, it can be stated that the Death Metal share on Beyond The Limit Of Sanity is still the biggest. Especially when playing the guitar, one does not skimp on dissonances. An Oceans Of Nightmares gallops ahead with powerful vocals, razor-sharp guitars and double bass rhythms, just like you HERE can see.
Happily sounds Beyond The Limit Of Sanity not a bit Nordic or how you imagine metal from the far north. It’s not as cold as you might think, but it still has a lot of rough edges. By definition, it can’t be a typical representative of any genre, and from that it develops a great deal of appeal. Even if I Will Be Your Eyes is the longest piece, so it is by no means central. Rather, all eight songs are stylistically similar and at most offer variations among themselves.
A mature fusion of different metal subgenres
To my taste, there is little Black Metal in it, but massively raw Death Metal. For me, the melody of the individual songs is quite comprehensible, so what’s on offer isn’t all that dissonant. All in all offer state zero on their debut a raw metal fusion for many tastes.
Luckily, the Norwegians sound amazingly original and don’t sit between two chairs, but have a broad stylistic basis and demonstrate self-confidence in the design of their first work.
Conclusion
With her full-time debut Beyond The Limit Of Sanity prove state zero an unerring sense for a finely differentiated Progressive Death Metal melange. For me a highlight in the young year. 9 / 10
