a crisp, short surprise concert by “sohn” in midsummer in the b72 – of course the vienna concert mightn’t be missing!
it was a very inconspicuous posting on social media that made it clear that we should meet at the b72 on that hot summer evening. because something secret and exciting was regarding to take place. it was very quickly clear what was going to happen: “sohn“ was in town rehearsing with his band for his tour. and he apparently wanted to present a few numbers in front of an audience.
still a bit damaged by the kilometer-long primavera sound festival queues, i was of the firm assumption that we would have to be there at least an hour before admission, because the rush would be huge. well, i was pretty wrong regarding that. we were the first and only before the empty b72. only the band was already there and out of pity, because we were there way too early, toph taylor, aka “son” himself, gave us two entry wristbands that gave us guaranteed entry. and so we whiled away the time until the official entrance by going for a walk and getting cheap drinks from the discount store.
at some point we were back, namely outside in the b72 guest garden, and chatted with friends who had meanwhile also arrived. it was incredibly muggy and the thought of going into an even muggier b72 made us all sweat even more. stop summer. when at some point a few people made their way to the incubator aka b72, we followed them. if we’re sweating, then in the front row!
and then the mini-concert started. mini-concert because the set list on the stage floor already suggested that the whole undertaking would be a short pleasure. the set started with “figureskating, neusiedlersee” – this song was already known because it had already been released as a lyric video at the time. we immersed ourselves very gently in this son’s concert – without light effects, without special features, just the raw music. the stage was far too small for the number of band members, but somehow this tight, semi-circular circle had something nice, almost familiar regarding it.
It went on – the very quiet “caravel” sounded and everyone present listened devoutly. a melody that nobody would have expected penetrated our ears. the next piece “i won’t” was also completely different than expected. his songs weren’t the groovy electronica creations anymore, rather it became clear that son was slowly but surely developing in the direction of pop classics. following the almost retro-tinged song “truce” came the absolute highlight: “riverbank”. a piece that has an incredibly inviting melody and that really erupts in the chorus. we all got goosebumps, sweating in the b72. this song felt so awesome!
following so much new music material, we were then allowed to listen to two well-known classics: “Renn” and “Conrad” rounded off this short concert evening perfectly and released us into a balmy summer night, which had become something very special. thank you son for letting us be there!
