Brazil’s Dani Alves still in custody

Brazilian soccer star Dani Alves remains in custody in Spain on charges of sexual assault.

A court in Barcelona on Tuesday rejected the appeal once morest the arrest warrant because of “high risk of absconding”. Alves might go to Brazil, following which extradition to Spain would no longer be possible, the court said.

A 23-year-old woman reported to Alves that she had touched her privates on December 30 in a nightclub in Barcelona. He was therefore arrested in Barcelona on January 20 and taken into custody. Alves had initially denied any sexual contact. His lawyer later stated that the sexual acts had taken place with the woman’s consent.

The Brazilian was under contract with FC Barcelona until 2022 and played for the Mexican club UNAM Pumas until his arrest. He also took part in the World Championships in Qatar with the “Selecao”. The right-back is currently in prison regarding 40 kilometers north-west of Barcelona.
