Lithium: an important step

The so-called Lithium Table, made up of the governors of Jujuy, Salta and Catamarca and the representatives of the Secretariat for Strategic Affairs of the Nation and the company Y-TEC, agreed on the need to implement mechanisms so that lithium-producing companies assign a percentage of said production, for industrialization and added value in the Argentine Republic.

The objective, as reported, is to make the country’s export potential compatible with the availability of lithium to promote a local industrialization process that promotes the development of the litiferous provinces, under the idea that “the lithium economy represents an opportunity to strengthen the industrialization and progress in territorial development, avoiding the risks of a reprimarization of the Argentine economy, which deepens the existing asymmetries within the country”.

At this table, following pointing out that the provinces are not participating in the extraordinary profits obtained by the companies due to the considerable growth in international prices, the president of the governor table outlined as a final conclusion:

“We have decided to implement a debate and negotiations with the companies, and implement measures so that as much lithium as possible remains in the Argentine Republic for its industrialization for value-added projects. “We have raised our concern, since there is an exorbitant increase in lithium prices internationally, that this is not compatible with the income that the lithific provinces are receiving.”

Under the evidence that in the “South American Lithium Triangle”, 58% of the world’s resources are found in the region of the salt flats shared by Argentina, Chile and Bolivia, and under the conviction that the importance of lithium as a strategic mineral will increase exponentially in its condition as an essential component of the clean energy systems of the future, a discussion that is timely, indispensable and necessary has been brewing in our Latin America.

In this area of discussion, the debate does not necessarily go through the objectives linked to the creation of thousands of jobs, the strong economic and social impact, etc. that together are declaimed remand, is circumscribed, to the existence of 2 (two) visions that as underdeveloped countries, with a vision of the future, we as a society must analyze adequately.

The first associated with the 19th century vision where it is assumed without restrictions, that our mineral wealth must be exploited and sold in the largest quantity, as quickly as possible, regardless of its degree of processing and industrialization, in order to obtain in the shortest possible time the expected profits.

The second associated with the XXI Century vision, where it is considered that the value of mineral resources as a privilege and patrimony of the country, is not only subject to their condition as raw mineral, but is also associated with their quality, complexity and the benefits that are generated along the entire line of the industrialization cycle. From this vision, the challenge of assuming a scientific-technical, modern and relevant policy involves how to articulate? The creation of knowledge and knowledge that is generated in universities, research institutes and work centers in relation to natural assets and the needs that press society as a whole.

From this conception, the challenge is simple: ensure a long-term supply of lithium, link foreign companies to the scientific-technological ecosystem, under the objective of promoting the work and development of scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs, SMEs, opening the way to a Sovereign Development. That is, to think strategically with a vision of the State, the future of our peoples.

It should be noted to conclude that the importance of our mining resources today arises because:

-Of Climate Change that forces the world to move towards its sustainability and towards development, where renewable energies are the protagonists of this new paradigm.

-From the emergency in the context of geopolitical tensions, of one or more alternative Systems to the SIWFT System from which it is estimated that the American dollar will relegate its position as a key currency in the international monetary system and Gold will strengthen its Reserve of Value condition.
