The great heaviness – Nirvana, Grunge and the spirit of optimism of the 1990s.
The Smashing Pumpkins sing “Intoxicated with the madness, I’m in love with my sadness” in the song “Zero” and thus summed up the era of grunge. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and last but not least Nirvana – what would the 90s be without the commitment to emotional emptiness and sadness, the open display of inner blackness.
When grunge conquered the world from Seattle in 1991, a long-ignored heaviness returned to pop that seemed to speak to the soul of many. The celebration of sadness became a connecting element between musicians and their fans. After the suicide of Nirvana’s Kurz Cobain, grunge was officially declared dead, some even say grunge never existed and prefer to call it the “Seattle Sound”. But the abyss that this style opened up in music remains. In Part 2 we dive down and explore the beginnings and endings of a phenomenon.
