Residential building on fire: onlookers disabled large-scale operation

A large fire brigade operation, but – apart from smoke poisoning – there were no victims in a house fire in St. Veit an der Glan on Sunday. The fire broke out in the garage, four cars burned down. The flames soon spread to the apartment above and the roof area.

Because onlookers hindered the emergency services, several directions had to be issued. A person who refused despite repeated requests had to be “removed from the area by using physical force and reported,” police said.

The emergency services were numerous: six volunteer fire brigades with a total of 24 vehicles and 118 men, the Red Cross with three vehicles and nine men, plus three police stations with five vehicles and eight men. The surrounding streets had to be closed to all traffic. The Kelag emergency service had to switch off overhead lines, and several households were without electricity.

A 28-year-old resident tried to put out the fire. He suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to the LKH St. Veit an der Glan. The amount of damage and the cause of the fire have not yet been determined, but the district fire investigator and the Carinthia State Criminal Police Office are trying to clarify them.
