This Sunday, following three years of restraint, the famous carnival of Aalst has made the Land of Dender vibrate once more. An event where satire is king: huge floats making fun of politicians (Frank vandenbroucke, Maggie De Block, NVA mayor of Aalst…), diverted songs, crazy choreographies, and of course a lot of caustic costumes.
Like many politicians in East Flanders, the president of the Flemish socialists, Conner Rousseau (Vooruit), went to the carnival, disguised as… a supporter of RWDM, the emblematic football club of Molenbeek.
A barely concealed reference to his recent incendiary outings on Molenbeek. Last April, the socialist said in an interview with Humo: “when I walk in Molenbeek, I don’t feel like in Belgium”. Remarks which caused an outcry in the capital… and which Rousseau reiterated a few months later.
Conner Rousseau reiterates his controversial statements towards Molenbeek: “A visit to the town confirmed it to me, I don’t feel at home there”
