Nicola Bulley, 45, was last seen near the River Wyre on January 27, shortly following dropping off her two daughters, aged six and nine, at school.
Her phone was found on a bench in a park, still connected to a conference call and her dog was off the leash.
Local police have seen a barrage of criticism rain down on her for their handling of the case, particularly following it was revealed that she suffered from menopause-related alcohol problems.
The disappearance area has seen an influx of media and amateur detectives.
Lancashire Police announced on Sunday that a further search of the river ‘unfortunately’ resulted in the discovery of a body.
“Procedures to identify the body are ongoing,” police said in a statement, adding that the cause of death has not been determined.
“Nicola’s family has been informed of these developments and our thoughts are with them at this most difficult time,” she added.
