Mamãe Taguá resumes revelry in Taguatinga with 27 years of history

On Saturday (18), around 2,000 people gathered around the festivities performed by the group

One of the most traditional blocks in the Federal District, the Mamãe Taguá block, once once more brought joy to the population of Taguatinga, this time in a new location, in Taguaparque. On Saturday (18), around 2,000 people gathered around the festivities performed by the group.

Created in 1995, Mamãe Taguá was the alternative for a group of artists who missed the carnival revelry in Taguatinga. Over time, it became one of the most traditional blocks in the administrative region.

According to Jorge Cimas, one of the organizers of the event, the objective is to rescue the joy of family carnivals, valuing and spreading the Momesca culture in Brasilia. “We’ve been on the street for 27 years, formerly with the trio on the avenue and now in Taguaparque; without going through the streets, now we are with several bands, animating the community”, he says.

This year, the block was supported by the Cultural Support Fund (FAC), by the Secretariat for Culture and Creative Economy (Secec), with resources of R$ 150,000. “In the past, we had direct hiring,” recalls Cimas. “We had a series of conversations with the secretariat and the FAC, both for Mamãe Taguá and for several blocks. This means solidifying the DF Carnival. We talk a lot regarding territoriality, and Carnival is not just in Plano Piloto. Serving the community is essential to solidify this cultural memory of those who live in other regions”.

According to the organization of the party, Mamãe Taguá generated around 250 direct and indirect jobs, from hiring security guards and brigade members to moving street vendors during the more than six hours of Saturday’s parade.

“The best thing regarding Carnival this year was this decentralization”, evaluates teacher Kate Sousa, a resident of Taguatinga who took her family to accompany the block. “Now it’s not just in Plano Piloto, but in several administrative regions, and everyone can participate. The structure is very nice and organized. With the block during the day, the whole family can play and dance. I always liked the Carnival in Brasilia, and today, close to home, I was able to enjoy it even more”.
