One of the most common foods in the kitchens of Colombian families and from different parts of the world is the egg. Due to its versatility, it is an ideal ally to prepare different dishes. In addition, its taste is very pleasant.
The egg is one of the foods that have the greatest nutritional power compared to many of the other foods that are eaten daily. It is characterized by being rich in proteins of high biological value and with an ideal component of amino acids.
In addition, the content of monounsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids far exceeds that of saturated fat. It also contains omega 3 fatty acids, which have shown beneficial effects on health.
In the same way, it is necessary to emphasize that this concentration of nutrients is accompanied by a low caloric intake, which is ideal for a balanced diet with the same low caloric value.
The digital platform of the Institute for Egg Studies mentioned more health effects with egg consumption:
1. Eggs are good for the brain. “Eggs contain choline, a little-known nutrient that plays an important role in building cell membranes and is involved in several vital functions in our bodies. Eggs are one of the best natural sources of choline. It supports healthy brain development, plays a prominent role in liver function and metabolism, and has been documented to reduce the risk of breast cancer.
2. Eggs and their effect on the heart. “Several studies have concluded that eating eggs can reduce the risk of heart disease in healthy people. Despite containing cholesterol, eggs contain a high level of the good (HDL) cholesterol, and research shows that people with higher HDL levels generally have a lower risk of developing heart disease.”
4. They help keep people healthy at any age. “Eggs provide beneficial components for everyone at any age. They provide the nutrients that help the developing fetus, keep us active and energized throughout the day, and are a healthy source of high-quality protein, which we need at all ages.
Other health benefits of eggs
- Thanks to its dose of vitamin D, the egg stimulates the absorption and fixation of calcium in bones and teeth. This, without omitting that its protein is beneficial for the muscles.
- Being rich in biotin, the egg stops hair loss and seborrheic dermatitis, plus the white contains amino acids (proline) that induce the production of collagen, the same that helps care for the skin and keep wrinkles at bay.
Also, it is valid to emphasize that the yolk contains lutein, selenium, choline, lecithin and folic acid, essential chemical elements for health. “Even so, many people waste it when it is definitely a nutraceutical food (provides medical or health benefits)”exposed Quintana López, for the Carlos Slim Foundation.
According to the specialist, these are some of the reasons to consume egg with yolk:
- The yolk contains anti-inflammatory sialic acid; selenium, which serves as a natural antioxidant, and carotenes, which reduce the risk of developing cataracts in the elderly.
- In young people it prevents sarcopenia, which is the degenerative loss of muscle mass and strength with age.
- On the other hand, in the nucleus of the egg are all the vitamins, except C, and all the minerals. “Its active lipid is very suitable for improving memory, especially in children and the elderly,” says the expert.
