Less money would actually be better

Austria’s parties are funded by the state. Nothing wrong with that. Except that the windfall is more plentiful than is good for the country.

If you include party funding from the federal government in addition to that from the federal states, the total is almost 224 million euros per year, with a strong upward trend due to inflation.

The ÖVP Seniors’ Association must repay money that it received as part of the Corona aid. Similar cases in the rural ÖVP metier might follow. The trick of founding an association with the same name, the same address and with the same staff next to an ÖVP sub-organisation, fooling the rest of the world into believing that said association had nothing to do with the party and enlisting Corona aid did not work.

Incidentally, malice from the SPÖ is not appropriate. Or better: Would only be appropriate if the SPÖ were free from sins in this regard…
