If a kitchen sink is practical for washing dishes, it would actually be a real nest of bacteria according to a British study.
Our house is full of objects covered in germs. Despite good cleaning, they are frequently contaminated due to repeated use. In fact, they can promote the spread of certain diseases like the flu or gastroenteritis. Among the most contaminated everyday objects are door handles, make-up accessories, smartphones and car interiors.
However, other elements are actually nests of microbes and fungi. And a British study published in Environmental DNA has put forward a new one. The latter is in your kitchen, and more precisely in your sink.
In effect, hole for water drainage would be one of the dirtiest places in the kitchen. In fact, it can pose a health risk.
Over 375 different mushrooms found in this small space
The study in question was conducted within the University of Cambridge and directly with students. To determine the risks associated with this part of the sink, the researchers took samples on campus. In total, 412 samples from 20 different buildings were realized.
In order to be as close as possible to the conditions of daily use, the researchers chose sinks used mainly for washing dishes and washing hands. Then they brought the samples to the lab for analysis. They then discovered at least 375 different species of fungi housed in sink drains.
If some species were completely harmless, this is not the case for all. The researchers noticed the presence of basidiomycetes, fusarium and malassezia. These three types of fungi can cause fungal infections, sinusitis, dermatological diseases or even viral infections.
How to avoid such a proliferation in your sink?
To limit the multiplication of fungi and bacteria, properly disinfecting your sink is essential. Several options are possible. For example, you can pour some white vinegar down the drain. In addition, you can use this household product to clean the rest of the installation.
But for deep disinfection, it is recommended touse a little bleach. Finally, it is essential not to neglect the weekly maintenance of this area of the kitchen, especially if a lot of leftover food is leaking into the pipes.
