Carnival in Rio de Janeiro started

The “biggest party in the world” has begun in Rio de Janeiro: Mayor Eduardo Paes handed over the city key to Carnival King Rei Momo on Friday, officially ringing in the great days at Sugar Loaf. At the street carnival, dozens of carnival groups – the so-called blocos – will be moving through the streets of the districts in the coming days and creating a good atmosphere.

The city administration approved 445 parades this season, and the best groups show their skills in the sambodrome. Tens of thousands of spectators in the stands and millions on TV in Brazil and around the world usually watch the parades.

After the carnival in Rio was not celebrated at all or only with restrictions in the past two years due to the corona pandemic, the celebrations are back in full force this year. The tourism agency Riotur expects up to 5.5 million carnival fans in the city. According to a report by the “Carnavalesco” portal, the spectacle brings the city revenues of around 620 million euros.
