Health | Marseille – International Childhood Cancer Day: “Even when you have everything, it’s hard to save a life”

It is the leading cause of death by disease in children. Each year, pediatric cancers affect more than 2,800 children and adolescents in France. In order to make this reality better known and to promote prevention actions, but also care and research, an International Childhood Cancer Day is organized every February 15th.

Renaud Muselier, President of the South Region, recently lent his support to the Flavien Foundation, which carries out a clinical trial project for children with brain tumours. The fruit of six years of work carried out by the Scientific Center of Monaco around a “molecule of hope“whose name is axitinib. This clinical trial would allow 36 children in France suffering from relapsed brain tumors to have access to this innovative treatment for pediatric brain cancers. All supervised by Professor Nicolas André at the Timone Hospital.”The Region’s commitment is significant but we still do not know the amount and we have no news. One thing is certain, today there are 300,000 of the 620,000 necessary to start this clinical trial“, says Denis Maccario, president and founder of the Flavien Foundation, which bears the name of his son who died of this disease in 2014.

The Foundation would like this clinical trial, which would take place over three years, to be launched as early as March. “It would be ideal because we are ready, the only thing missing is the funding. When it comes to pediatric cancers, everyone is emotional, but the majority of commitments come from Mr. and Mrs. everyone or from private companies”, continues Denis Maccario. And to add: “The truth is that even when you have everything at hand, it’s hard to save a life..”
