Mexican Defense Minister Luis Cresencio Sandoval announced Proteo’s death at a press conference on Monday. The task of the German shepherd Proteo was to search under collapsed buildings for survivors.
One of his human colleagues paid tribute to Proteo in a video: “You were always a strong, hard working dog who never gave up. I will always remember you.”

The Mexican military tweeted: “You have accomplished your mission. Thank you for your heroic work.” According to “El Colombiano”, Proteo is said to have saved two people’s lives before he died.
Meanwhile, a video is circulating online showing a rescue operation when a landslide suddenly occurs. According to the tweet, Proteo died. However, this is not confirmed. The Mexican military has not provided any information on the cause of the dog’s death.
