Thyroid hormones affect people’s breathing, heart rate, weight, digestion, and moods.

The thyroid is a small gland located in the front of the neck. It produces hormones that are responsible for controlling the way the body uses energy. These affect almost every organ in the body and control many of its functions, explains the US National Library of Medicine.

For example, they affect breathing, heart rate, weight, digestion and moods. Without enough thyroid hormones, many of the body’s functions slow down, with consequences this suggests.

  • Fatigue
  • Weight gain
  • swollen face
  • Problems tolerating the cold
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Constipation
  • Dry Skin
  • dry and thin hair
  • decreased sweating
  • Heavy or irregular menstrual periods
  • Fertility problems in women
  • Depression
  • low heart rate
  • Goiter, an enlarged thyroid that can make the neck look swollen. Sometimes it can cause trouble breathing or swallowing.

Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) indicate that approximately 750 million people suffer from some thyroid pathology such as hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, thyroiditis and thyroid cancer, among others.

It is said that diet has a lot to do with the functioning of the thyroid, although, in general, according to the Mayo Clinic research institute, the most important thing is to consume the adequate amount of iodine in the diet. “If you follow a balanced diet, it is not necessary to take iodine supplements. In fact, too much of this mineral can cause hyperthyroidism in some people,” says the aforementioned source. Iodine is used by the thyroid to produce hormones.

There are foods in particular that have the ability to block the absorption and use of iodine, so it should be avoided or reduced if the person has problems with this important gland.

It is very common for people to eat cabbages in salads and mainly raw. However, according to the aforementioned source, these vegetables contain compounds with a goitrogenic effect, that is, they have the ability to block the absorption and use of iodine. In case of suffering from hypothyroidism, it is advisable to consume these products in moderation and always cooked.

These two foods contain substances that compete with iodine. The ideal is to cook them well so that they do not generate an effect on the thyroid.

This food should not be consumed in excess, because it contains alpha lipoic acid that can interfere with drugs for hypothyroidism.

Morales assures that soy and its derivatives contain isoflavones, a phytoestrogen that alters the function of the thyroid gland, especially in patients with iodine deficiency. It has been suggested that soy foods may increase the dose of thyroid hormone required by patients with hypothyroidism and therefore consumption should be avoided or regulated in any of its presentations.

Sausages are rich in nitrites, nitrates and other substances that affect the condition of the thyroid. When they are included too frequently and without moderation in the diet, they can lead to hypothyroidism and, in the face of the disease, they generate complications both in metabolism and in cardiovascular health, the expert specifies.
